Peugeot Say No To 208 CC and 208SW

Hairdressers across the length and breadth of Britain are going to be severely disappointed if a report by Automotive News Europe is correct.

They are reporting a Peugeot spokesman as saying that Peugeot will not be building a 208 CC and that there will be no 208 SW (208 Estate) either. What Peugeot do appear to be planning is yet another SUV or Crossover (depending how you look at it) to fit in below the new Mitsubishi derived 4008 which is expected to get the Peugeot 2008 moniker. Check out the HR1 Concept for a clue as to how the 2008 might look like size wise.

The all new Peugeot 208 has a weight of expectations resting on it with Peugeot’s European sales being on a sharp decline these past few months. Management at PSA will be hoping that the new 208 can rekindle the type of sales and affection that the original hot hatch, the 205, had.

When news of  the development of the 208 first surfaced, it was expected to spurn a wide variety of models, much like BMW have done with the Mini, but it appears as if development of niche spin offs has been curtailed for the time being, which is understandable given the fact that Peugeot are currently hemorrhaging money right, left and centre in Europe.

Hairdressers aside, there is no doubt that European buyers are turning to compact urban warrior vehicles, which manufacturers say are far more appealing to todays car buyers than an estate car, most of them cite the Nissan Juke as an example.
