Audi and BMW have been trying to outsmart each other for the last few years when it comes to advertising their products in the United States. Cheeky banter between the both outfits is still kicking.
The latest banter between Audi and BMW is being labelled the ‘Billboards War’. It started when Audi posted an ad for its new A4 with the headline: “Your Move, BMW.”
BMW took up the challenge and placed a bigger billboard beside the Audi one featuring their new 3 Series and the uber-confident line: “Checkmate.”
Audi didn’t waste too much time in replying, in a matter of days they brought the game to another level, posting another and larger billboard right next to BMW’s “Checkmate” featuring its exotic R8 with the line, “Your pawn is no match for our king.”
Okay, fast running out of billboard space, perhaps thats the end of the game? Wrong!
BMW were not to be outdone, they brought out a customised zeppelin and flew it over the Audi and tethered it to the R8 board. The advertising blimp shows a BMW F1 car and a proclaimation: “Game Over.”
Whats next?

Hahaha! BMW’s marketing team FTW!

Super cool Ad war. Thanks for sharing.
Sad that BMW’s counter is car that hasn’t raced in over 3 years. Given that they’ve moved into non-road-going cars, I guess Audi can counter with the Audi R18 Le Mans car that’s only lost one outing at Le Mans.
Erik, I was thinking the same thing, who knows, that might just appear as an Ad too!
great post! this “billboard war” actually happened back in 2009. the “checkmate” billboard idea came from juggernaut advertising in santa monica. everything after that is result of some great photoshop ideas…here’s a clip on the original: http://vimeo.com/14180636
Thanks for the clip John! Yeah, the airship just doesn’t look right when you look a bit further, but great fun nontheless!
“Winning” w/ an R18 or Win, Place, Show w/ R15s or Winning 24/7… (actually 10 times, but who’s counting…)
That should end this
F1 is the pinnacle of cars, and Audi doesn’t make a Jet. So I don’t know what they will do now. But this is some of the best ad wars of all times. Wish I could see it in person.
I’ll tell you what’s next. Audi shoots down the blimp with a drone
Since BMW left F1 years ago, there should be plenty of room for Audi comeback. Audi has won LeMans, BMW quit.
